Modern classics outstrip older models at the NEC

The highest price of the two-day sale was for a 1994 Jaguar XJ220, which achieved a canny hammer price of £220,000 (£247,500 inc premium). A similarly aged Porsche 911 964 Turbo 3.6 sold for £220,500.

The first owner of the 20-year-old Jaguar was the Sultan of Brunei. It’s lived a cossetted life, having covered less than 6,000 miles.

The high-achieving 911 was said to be in immaculate, original condition, and specced with a long list of factory options. Showing only 46,000 kms, it came from a significant German collection.

Rare Mercedes makes £180,000

Older German classics also made high prices, including an early 1955 190SL that sold for £180,000, exceeding its estimate by £20,000. The 729th car built, it features a two-part dash, Gullwing seats and a different drain plug location from later models.

And, without even making an appearance in the auction sale room, an ultra-rare Mercedes 280SE Cabriolet achieved more than £200,000.

One of only 68 RHD models built, the 1970 SL was unfortunately still in transit from Australia when it went under the hammer. Yet, the car – reputedly in concours condition after an extensive professional restoration – was sold for £219,375.

As it was bought unseen, the buyer was only asked to pay a 30% deposit at the end of the sale. The remainder will be paid if the car lives up to expectations when it arrives in the UK.

S1 Land Rover exceeds expectations

The sale lots were pretty varied though, and also included a cherished 1955 Series 1 Land Rover that fetched £38,250 – more than £14,000 above the estimate. It was owned by one family for 30 years, prior to being treated to a five-year restoration.

Another rarity was a DeLorean DMC-12 that sold for £28,125 – around £3,000 more than others sold recently. A late-entry to the sale, it was offered with no reserve and there were no details in the catalogue.
