Something different: WW2 RAF trainer plane on offer

The Miles M14 Magister Hawk is one of the planes used to teach RAF pilots before they graduated into Hurricanes and Spitfires. A development of the Hawk Major and Hawk Trainer, the low-wing monoplane was the ideal introduction to high-performance flying for pilots.

The open-top, two-seater was also used in anger during the war, and in civil aviation afterwards.

The Magister Hawk on offer at Bonhams’ Bond Street sale was once part of the Strathallan Collection of historic aircraft. In fact, it’s the only plane collection owner Sir William Roberts retained after dispersing the collection in 1981.

The M14A on offer was restored while owned by Sir Roberts, and is believed to have had an engine rebuild in the 1990s. Although it was flown regularly, it now needs some recommissioning before further use. It was sold for £46,000.
