Barn-finds and modern classics make good money at Bonhams’ Aston Martin sale

Bonhams offered more than 50 cars and 170 automobilia lots at its 16th annual Aston Martin sale on 9 May. The first car up, a highly original 1958 DB MkIII saloon in need of restoration, sold for a whopping £104,500, more than doubling its upper estimate of £50,000. The car had been owned by the vendor since 1975, and had been stored since 1977.

Another very original car was a 1984 Lagonda saloon with just 1,632 miles on its clock. First delivered to the USA, the left-hand drive car was in original, unrestored condition. It sold for £98,940 - £25,000 above estimate.

The second Lagonda at the Aston Martin sale also proved popular. Recently refurbished and showing a genuine 29,000 miles, the 1984 car went for just over £50,000 - £15,000 more than expected.

A bumper crop of 21 DB models were on offer at the Newport Pagnell sale. A pair of convertibles was the undisputed stars of this pack. First up was a rare 1962 DB4 Series IV Vantage soft top – just one of nine original left-hand-drive cars – first owned by the legendary actor, playwright and diplomat Sir Peter Ustinov. He ordered the car with the recently introduced Special Series Vantage engine, and had the car delivered to the Montreux Palace Hotel in Switzerland on 27th July 1962.

The DB4, which had been in a private collection for the past few years, was in need of some recommissioning. It sold for £1,513,500 - £500,000 above estimate.

That wasn’t quite as much as the penultimate sale lot, a 1966 DB5 convertible, restored to Vantage spec by a marque specialist. The 1966 Aston soared to £1,524,700 - £300,000 more than expected – making it the highest achiever of the 2015 sale.

If the cars were too pricey, there was plenty of other Aston Martin memorabilia on offer. A limited edition gold-plated James Bond 007 DB5 model, offered with an Aston Martin medal with an estimate, sold for £375. And a gorgeous half-scale DB1R child’s car went for £25,000.
