Silverstone adds first competition car sale to July Classic line-up

Silverstone Auctions has added a third sale to its Silverstone Classic line-up. Taking place on Thursday 23 July, it will offer more than 30 lots, including a number of historically important racing cars and signed automobilia.

According to the auction house, the decision to add a third sale to the event has been driven by the growing popularity of historic racing cars and the unprecedented demand for them at the Silverstone Classic motorsport event. The usual Saturday and Sunday sales will still take place as usual.

Among the lots on offer at the Competition sale are the March 783 Formula 3 car driven by Nigel Mansell in 1978 and five Formula 1 and 3 cars driven and owned by Italian racing star Piercarlo Ghinzani in the 1970s and ‘80s.

Touring car fans will appreciate the Nissan Primera Super Tourer that’s on offer for £90,000-£105,000. The 1998 season car was driven by Anthony Reid, Tiff Needell and David Leslie, helping Reid to take second place overall in the championship.

Historic racers on offer include a 1953 Turner Sports Racing car that's just one of seven built, a 1961 Lotus Mk14 Elite Super 95 and the iconic championship-winning 1975 Chevron B31.

There are also some great action photo prints signed by the likes of Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost with estimates of £100 to £250, and a Signature Edition Ford GT40 Le Mans model on a plaque signed by Dan Gurney.

Cars consigned for the 25-26 July Classic sales include a 2000 Mercedes S600L formerly owned by Sir Elton John being offered with no reserve, and a low-mileage full service history Porsche 930 Turbo Limited Edition that’s expected to achieve £120,000-£140,000.
