Top 10 classic car auction prices from June 2015

More than 760 classic cars were sold at major auctions across the UK, Europe and the USA last month, achieving a total of £35 million, the highest achiever was one of the last last sold. The success rate for cars selling remained strong at 74%.
The highest price of the month - £2.9 million - was made by an ex-works 1935 Aston Martin Ulster that had been driven in period by a wealth of well-known drivers at all the major races. Famous drivers included Dick Seaman, Tommy Clarke and Maurice Falkner, and prestigious races included the 1935 Le Mans 24-Hours and Ards TT and the 1936 Mille Miglia and French Grand Prix.
Not only did this car have superb history, it had also been in single family ownership since 1969, adding to its desirability. After a lengthy saleroom-phone battle at Bonhams’ Goodwood Festival of Speed sale, it was sold to a European buyer. The £2.9 price it achieved is the highest to date for a pre-war Aston Martin, the previous highest was £1,300,700 for a 1934 Ulster at a Bonhams sale in 2013.
The Festival of Speed sale provided six of this month’s top 10 sellers. Other highlights included Sir Stirling Moss’s Porsche RS61, which made £1.9 million, and a beautifully restored Aston Martin DB4 convertible that went for £964,700.
French auction house Artcurial was responsible for the other four top 10 cars. They included a timewarp Ferrari F40 with just 8,510kms on its clock, which sold for just under £700,000, and a Porsche 911 ST Rallye lightweight – number six of 43 made, it had been treated to a £100,000 restoration, and sold for just over £625,000.
