Exclusive ClassicCarPrice research shows auction sales at all-time high

A massive 30% more classic cars were offered at auction between January and June this year than in the same period in 2014, with June topping 1,000 entries for the first time ever.

ClassicCarPrice.com tracks all major UK, European and American auctions and provides trends and analysis of the market to help collectors and enthusiasts make an informed choice on their next classic car investment.

Figures show that the number of vehicles going through auction increased by 30% in the first half of 2015, from 3,500 in 2014 to more than 4,600. And, in the 10 classic car sales held during June, a record 1,040 vehicles went under the hammer.

In terms of value, the amount of money spent at classic car auctions so far this year is more than £350 million – that’s an £88 million increase on the same period last year.

Demonstrating the strength of the classic car market, the percentage of cars that sold has remained virtually constant – 75% of those offered so far in 2015 sold, compared with 76% for 2014.

ClassicCarPrice.com Market Analyst Dave Selby commented: ‘Although the market is buoyant, particularly at the top end, there are opportunities at all levels for the investor, collector and enthusiast. There is considerable price variability in the auction market. You can take advantage of that. There are also makes and models that are seemingly undervalued, ripe for rotation, as we say. ClassicCarPrice.com gives you the tools to make informed buying decisions to get the best deal.’

While the auction sector is only a small part of the classic car market, the fact that it’s thriving is a clear indicator of the growing popularity of classics among enthusiasts, collectors and investors.

Such growth in the amount of cars in the market makes it more important than ever for classic car buyers to be able to keep abreast of price trends, so they can buy at the best price.
