Barn finds popular at Silverstone sale

Alongside the gleaming Ferraris and Jaguars at the 2014 Silverstone Autumn Sale there were a couple of Aston Martins that should have had restoration project written across their dusty paintwork.

The first was a 1970 DBS – the more angular shaped aluminium-bodied Aston that replaced the DB6.

With its previous owner for 28 years, it had a respray in original British racing green and some chassis work done. But the engine was last started 10 years ago and the current mechanical condition of the car is stated as ‘unknown’.

That didn’t dent the enthusiasm of Silverstone bidders though, with the car finally going under the hammer for £3,350 - £13,000 more than the lower estimate.

A second 1970s Aston restoration project was also snapped up at the Autumn sale. The 1978 Series III V8 has been in storage for 15 years, but had been well cared for before then. It sold for £22,425 – like the DBS mentioned above, that’s tens of thousands of pounds less than pristine examples of these models are selling for.

As expected, the highly desirable 1985 Ferrari 308 GTS QV fetched a whopping £88,850. The QV in its name refers to the four valves per cylinder on its V8 engine. The fastest factory spec 308 built by Ferrari, this GTS pumps out 240hp, and is more powerful than its American counterparts.

This cossetted machine, in superb original condition, has covered just over 10k miles and spent much of its life garaged.

A rather different vehicle that achieved far more than its sale estimate was a 1951 GMC pick-up truck. The subject of a total restoration by a well-known hot rod specialist in 1988, this American truck has won a number of concours competitions and been featured in Hot Rod magazine.

The pick-up, which is old enough to be tax and MOT exempt, sold for £22,080 – almost £9000 more than its lower estimate.
